QuestionAnswer
Do I need a stamp or a visa if I want to enter a Schengen country? Please consult the country table.
Somebody on board my ship is ill. What action should I take? The sick person who is unable to travel on board an ocean vessel on departure must be reported to the border crossing point where the vessel is berthed. Entry formalities will be completed there. For the specific procedure please see the information under the heading
"Procedure for sick persons"
When is a person a passenger?A person is a passenger on board an ocean vessel if he is not a crew member and so has not signed on.
Must a passenger wanting to leave the ship and requiring a visa have a visa in his border crossing document beforehand?Yes. An occasional exception is made if the passenger has a relationship with one of the crew members. The passenger can then obtain a visa at the border crossing point if he or she satisfies the entry conditions.
When is a document permitting the holder to cross the border no longer valid?A document permitting the holder to cross the border can be used up to three months before the end date mentioned in the document.
My border crossing document is no longer valid. What must I do?The border crossing document will have to be renewed at an embassy or consulate, if possible. If this is impossible, a laissez-passer or a separate visa statement can be issued at the border crossing point in special cases.
What document does a crew member need if he wants to go ashore?Crew members do not need to carry any border crossing documents if they go ashore in the place where the ship is berthed and the adjoining municipalities. Crew members must hold a border crossing document [e.g. on board] This border crossing document need not be valid. Crew members must carry a valid border crossing document with them if they leave that area and crew members requiring a visa will have to travel through the border crossing point because they need to be granted entry. They will eventually be granted a visa in their border crossing documents after having satisfied the conditions. Crew members who have a duty to report and require an official stamp will not receive a stamp.
When are crew allowed to go ashore?1) When the immigration check has taken place.
2) If permission has been requested and obtained from an immigration officer.
3) Shore leave is also permitted in Rotterdam if no check has taken place after six hours, counting from the time that the vessel passed "the low light at Hook of Holland"
What does a passenger need if he or she goes ashore?A passenger always needs a valid border crossing document bearing a stamp or a visa. They must carry this document with them.
What should I do if a person remains behind? Please see the procedure in the information under the heading
"Persons remaining behind".
