What is a sick crew member or passenger?

A sick crew member or passenger is a crew member or passenger of an ocean vessel who is admitted to a hospital and is still there by the time the ship leaves the port.

Notice to be given of the sick person

The master or the ship agent representing the owners must give notice of the sick person to the immigration officer at the border crossing post where the ship is berthed.

Ship's departure

If the sick crewmember or passenger is still in hospital when the vessel leaves, the ship agent must report to the border-crossing point with the border-crossing document of the person concerned.
In most cases, an exit stamp or a travel visa for a maximum of 15 days will be placed in the border-crossing document.

If the stay is going to last longer than 15 days and the sick person needs a visa, the ship agent should contact the Immigration and Naturalisation Service [IND] in Zwolle or in Rijswijk(ZH) about extending the travel visa.
Office hours are from from 09.00-17.00 hrs from Monday to Friday.

Telephone: 0900-1234561.   Email: voorlichting@ind.minjus.nl   Internet: www.ind.nl

Guarantee declaration

The ship agent representing the owners will at all times have to sign a guarantee declaration and deliver it to the immigration officer dealing with the matter.

End of sick person's stay

The ship agent must notify the border crossing point where the sick person was attended to on arrival as soon as the sick person has recovered and is leaving the Schengen area.
